Is Calcium Chloride Pellets Safe for Concrete?
Calcium chloride pellets are a popular choice for melting ice, but they can damage concrete if used on new, weak, or non-air-entrained surfaces. While effective even in very cold temperatures, repeated use can cause cracking, spalling, and corrosion of steel reinforcements. To protect concrete, apply sparingly on fully cured surfaces, use safer alternatives like magnesium chloride or sodium acetate, and consider sealing your concrete before winter. Sand or coffee grounds can also provide traction without chemical damage.
